Bunk Beds Malaysia — Safe, Solid Double-Decker Beds for Kids
Give your children their own space without giving up the floor. A bunk bed (also called double-decker bed or katil dua tingkat) is the smartest way to fit two beds into one shared bedroom — leaving room for desks, storage, and play. TD Furniture builds bunk beds at our Lahat, Perak factory to safety standards we are willing to put our own children to bed in.
What Makes a Safe Bunk Bed
A bunk bed is not just a bed stacked on a bed — it is a structure that children will climb, swing on, and occasionally jump on. The safety details that matter:
- Guardrails on the upper bunk — minimum 26cm height above the mattress on all four sides, with no gap larger than 9cm that a small head could get stuck in. Our guardrails meet European EN 747 safety standards.
- Sturdy ladder or stairs — angled or step-form, not vertical. Treads at least 8cm deep with anti-slip surface. Our staircase-style ladders include side handrails for younger children.
- Reinforced frame and joints — bolt-and-cam construction with steel reinforcement at all load-bearing joints. Rated for 150kg+ continuous load on each bunk. We do not use staple or dowel-only construction.
- Slat support across the full bed — solid wood slats spaced no more than 6cm apart, prevent a mattress from sagging into the frame and ensure ventilation underneath.
- No exposed sharp edges or bolts — rounded corners, fully concealed bolt heads with caps. Children climb everywhere; nothing should cut them.
The TD Furniture Bunk Bed Range
- Classic Bunk Beds (3ft + 3ft): The standard kids' configuration — two single mattresses stacked, full guardrail, staircase ladder. Suitable for siblings ages 6+ on the upper bunk.
- Bunk Beds with Storage Drawers: Pull-out drawers beneath the lower bunk for clothes, toys, or bedding — converts the bed footprint into multi-function storage. Ideal for smaller bedrooms.
- Bunk Beds with Pull-Out Trundle: A third mattress hidden beneath the lower bunk on castor wheels — pulls out for sleepovers, extended family visits, or as a daily 3-child solution.
- Bunk Beds with Study Desk Underneath: Lower level is a study desk and shelving area; upper level is the bed. Perfect for single children with limited bedroom space, or older children (10+) studying in their own room.
- Bunk Beds with Slide: Themed children's bunk beds with built-in slide — playful designs for younger children who love their bedroom doubling as a play area.
Sizing Guide — Will It Fit?
- Ceiling height: Leave at least 60cm of headroom above the upper bunk mattress. Standard 9ft ceilings work fine; lower 8ft ceilings need a low-profile bunk bed design.
- Room footprint: Most bunk beds are 200cm long × 100cm wide × 165cm high. Add 60–80cm of clearance on at least one long side for getting in and out, and 90cm at the foot for the ladder.
- Mattress thickness: Use a thinner mattress (15–20cm) on the upper bunk so the guardrail remains the required 26cm above the mattress surface. Thicker mattresses defeat the safety rail.
What Age Is Safe for the Upper Bunk?
Industry guidance from paediatric safety organisations recommends children should be at least 6 years old before sleeping on the upper bunk — this is when most children have the coordination and judgement to use the ladder safely and not roll off the bed unconsciously. Until age 6, both children should sleep on the lower bunk or in separate beds. Our bunk beds are designed for ages 6+ on the upper level; the lower bunk is suitable for any age including toddlers transitioning from a cot.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age is safe for a child to sleep on the upper bunk?
Paediatric safety organisations and most international bunk bed safety standards recommend age 6 minimum for the upper bunk. By age 6, most children have the coordination to use the ladder safely and the spatial awareness not to roll off in their sleep. Below age 6, both children should use the lower bunk or sleep in separate beds. The lower bunk itself is fine for any age, including toddlers transitioning from a cot.
How much does a bunk bed cost at TD Furniture?
Classic 3ft + 3ft bunk beds start from RM2,500, bunk beds with storage drawers from RM2,900, bunk beds with study desk underneath from RM3,200, and themed bunk beds with slide from RM3,500–4,500. All prices include free delivery and full assembly in your child's bedroom. 0% instalment available with major credit cards.

Are TD Furniture bunk beds safe? What standards do they meet?
All our bunk beds are designed and built to meet European safety standard EN 747, which specifies guardrail height (minimum 26cm above the mattress), gap dimensions (no opening 9cm or larger that a small head could become trapped in), ladder construction (angled with anti-slip treads), and frame load capacity (rated 150kg+ per bunk). Joints use bolt-and-cam construction with steel reinforcement at all load-bearing points — we do not use staple-only or dowel-only joinery on bunk beds.
What size mattress do I need for the upper and lower bunk?
Standard configuration is 3ft (single) mattresses on both bunks. The upper bunk should use a thinner mattress (15–20cm thick) — this ensures the guardrail remains the required minimum 26cm above the mattress surface, preventing your child from rolling over the rail. A 25cm or thicker mattress on the upper bunk defeats the safety rail. The lower bunk can use any mattress thickness up to 25cm.
Can a bunk bed support an adult's weight?
Yes — our bunk beds are rated for 150kg+ continuous load on each bunk, well above the weight of any adult. The frame, slats, and joints are engineered to handle adult use (e.g., a parent sitting on the upper bunk to read a bedtime story, or an older teenager or young adult sleeping on it). The 150kg rating is conservative — actual structural capacity is significantly higher. The age recommendation (6+ on the upper bunk) is about coordination and safety judgement, not weight.
Will a bunk bed fit in a standard Malaysian bedroom?
Most Malaysian terrace and apartment bedrooms have 9ft (270cm) ceilings, which fits a standard bunk bed (165cm overall height) with comfortable headroom on the upper bunk. The bed itself needs about 200cm × 100cm of floor space, plus 60–80cm of clearance on one long side and 90cm at the foot for the ladder. For 8ft ceilings or smaller bedrooms, ask about our low-profile bunk bed designs.
Do you deliver and assemble bunk beds in Penang?
Yes — bunk beds are heavy, complex to assemble, and dangerous if assembled incorrectly. Free delivery and professional full assembly is included across Ipoh (Lahat, Tasek, PHL, Taman Gopeng), Kampar, Teluk Intan, Sitiawan, and Penang (Bukit Tengah, Bukit Mertajam, Bandar Perda). Our team handles the entire setup in your child's bedroom — we do not sub-contract delivery or assembly.
