8 Seater Dining Table Size: Dimensions and Room Needed
How big is an 8 seater dining table? Rectangular and round sizes, the 90 cm clearance rule and the room you need, from a Perak furniture factory.
The short answer on 8 seater dining table size is 200 to 240 cm long and 90 to 100 cm wide. The number on a product page hides two things that decide whether eight people sit comfortably: how the chairs are laid out, and how much floor the table needs around it. TD Furniture has built dining tables at its factory in Lahat, Perak since 2002, and these are the measurements we work from when a customer asks how big an 8 seater table really is.
How big is an 8 seater dining table?
Eight chairs fit around more than one size of table, so the useful question is how comfortable each size is. The table below uses 60 cm of table edge per person and 90 cm of clear floor on every side where someone sits. Both rules are explained further down. In the second column, 3 + 3 + 1 + 1 means three chairs on each long side and one at each end, and 4 + 4 means four on each long side.
| Table | How eight sit | How it feels | Minimum room |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200 × 100 cm | 3 + 3 + 1 + 1 | Comfortable | 3.8 × 2.8 m |
| 220 × 100 cm | 3 + 3 + 1 + 1 | Roomy | 4.0 × 2.8 m |
| 240 × 100 cm | 4 + 4 | Generous | 4.2 × 2.8 m |
| Round, 150 cm | 8 around the edge | Sociable, centre hard to reach | 3.3 × 3.3 m |
How long should a dining table be for 8 people?
Work from the person, not the table. Each diner needs about 60 cm of table edge for a place setting and room for elbows, so the length of the long side decides the layout. Three chairs a side need 180 cm of edge. Four a side need 240 cm. The end chairs sit on the short sides, which is why a width of 100 cm is more comfortable than 90 cm.
That is why 200 cm is the practical starting point for eight people, and 240 cm is where the layout changes to four a side. Below 200 cm you can still seat eight, but everyone gives up some elbow room. Width matters as well: 90 to 100 cm leaves space for serving dishes down the middle without anyone reaching across.
How much room does an 8 seater dining table need?
Leave at least 90 cm of clear floor between the table edge and the nearest wall, cabinet or doorway, on every side where someone sits. That is enough to pull a chair back and for another person to squeeze past behind it. On the side facing a doorway or the walkway to the kitchen, 100 to 120 cm is better.
Add 90 cm on each side to the table size and you have the minimum room. A 240 × 100 cm table needs about 4.2 × 2.8 m: 240 plus 180, and 100 plus 180. If one long side runs against a wall, nobody can sit there, so count your chairs again before you commit. Tape the outline of the table, plus the 90 cm, on the floor and walk around it for a day. Check the way in as well, because a 2.4 m tabletop has to get past your front door, the stairs or the lift.
Rectangular, round or extendable for eight?
- Rectangular is the safest choice for eight. It seats the most people with the least awkwardness and suits a long dining area.
- Round works for eight only at about 150 cm across. Beyond that the centre is too far to reach, so a round table is the better pick for a square room and a smaller group.
- Extendable suits a household of four to six that hosts eight a few times a year, such as for a reunion dinner. Measure it closed and open, and make sure the open length still leaves 90 cm all round.

Eight seater or six seater?
A table for six, about 150 to 180 cm long and 90 cm wide, is the most popular size for a Malaysian family home. Step up to eight if you regularly seat more than six, or if your dining room is at least 3.8 m long. If a full table is rare, an extendable six seater gives you the floor back on every other day of the year.
Tabletop material matters more on a large table, because a 2.2 m top is heavy and shows every stain. Our dining table buying guide compares wood, marble and sintered stone for Malaysia's humidity.
