Both wipe clean with a damp cloth within seconds of a spill — curry sauce, soy sauce, ribena, or milo are no match. PU leather is the easiest to maintain and the most stain-resistant; technology fabric is slightly more breathable and cooler to sit on, which matters in Malaysia's climate. Avoid velvet with young children — it absorbs liquid and stains are difficult to remove fully. Solid wood chairs with removable seat cushions are also practical — the cushion cover can be washed separately.
The standard rule: leave 25–30cm of clearance between the chair seat and the underside of the table top. Most dining tables are 75–78cm tall, which means a chair seat height of 44–48cm works for the majority of adults. If your table is on the higher end (78–80cm), look for chairs in the 46–48cm seat height range. Yes — mixing is a popular and deliberate interior design choice. The most common approach is armchairs at the two head positions (short ends of a rectangular table) and side chairs along the long sides. This creates a natural "host" positioning and adds visual interest. Another popular mix is two or four matching upholstered chairs at one side facing a bench or settee at the other — works well in open-plan dining areas. The key rule: keep the seat height and leg finish consistent even if the chair style differs — mixing gold-leg chairs with gold-leg armchairs looks intentional; mixing gold and black legs looks accidental.
